Discover Meiringspoort
Shaped by Nature
Over 200 million years, geological processes have shaped this remarkable natural feature. As the ravine carves its way through the Swartberg Mountains (recognised as one of the world’s most well-exposed fold mountain ranges), spectacular rock formations emerge. These formations were thrust upward and folded like pleats in the massive rock walls millions of years ago.
Historical Significance
Meiringspoort has a rich history dating back to its official opening in 1858. Local farmer Petrus Johannes Meiring played a pivotal role in advocating for the construction of a road through this challenging terrain, facilitating access between the Little Karoo and Great Karoo regions.
The Scenic Route
As you travel through the poort, the road meanders alongside the Groot River, crossing it 25 times. Each crossing (uniquely named, and carrying its own bit of history) provides a different perspective of the towering sandstone cliffs that rise dramatically on either side. These cliffs, shaped over millennia, reveal intricate layers of rock that tell the story of the Earth’s geological past.
The gorge is not only visually striking but also serves as an important ecological corridor. Its diverse habitats support a variety of flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. There are lovely picnic spots where you can soak up the peaceful beauty of the poort and a short hike leads up to the famous Meiringspoort waterfall – one of summer’s best-kept secrets with its cool waters inviting you to take a dip. Snap a photo or two, admire the view, and cool down under the cascade of clear mountain water.
