Day trip to Calitzdorp

A great day of fun and exploration neatly fitted into a 1-day trip.

Take a trip to our neighbouring town Calitzdorp, just 55 km down the R62, and see what this charming little Karoo town has on offer – from breathtaking scenery to exquisitely unique fauna & flora, beautiful Karoo architecture and some of the best dessert wines in the country.

Here are a few must-sees when visiting Calitzdorp:

Wine Tasting: Calitzdorp is home to various award-winning local cellars, which makes for some quality wine tasting but also delivers lovely craft gins, single grain whisky, potstill brandies and exceptional fortified wines.

Kruisrivier Gallery: Artist Roger Young’s gallery is located in a beautifully renovated school building and exhibits his photography and handcrafted wood furniture. Their coffee shop serves a great cup of coffee and has beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

Gamka River Safari Co Horse Riding: What a unique way to appreciate the spectacular scenery while interacting with these gentle, well-trained horses. If you’re an outdoor lover and equine enthusiast, don’t miss out on these amazing horseback riding tours.

Karoowater: Not only a fun summer destination, but during the cooler months, it’s the perfect place to take a break and enjoy the magnificent views. Fill up hungry tummies at their restaurant or soak away any cares or aches in their natural hot spring bath. [Pre-book your visit to avoid disappointment.]

Red Stone Hills: Take a scenic drive down the Groenfontein road through this extraordinary landscape with its rolling red hills. It’s the ideal way to leisurely soak up the immense natural beauty of this remarkable place.

Wyn Treintjie: Hop on Die Wyn Treintjie and have fun visiting Calitzdorp’s wineries, sampling their lovely wines and enjoying some sightseeing along the way. This tractor ride serves as transport from cellar to cellar, allowing you to hop on and off throughout the day within the stipulated time slots.

Calitzdorp Spa: Visit Calitzdorp Spa for their invigorating mineral-rich hot springs. At the eye, the water reaches a warm 50°C and is wonderfully relaxing, healing and rejuvenating for body and mind. Situated outside Calitzdorp, next to the Gamka Nature Reserve, the Spa offers stunning views and an abundance of eco-activities for outdoor enthusiasts.

Rooiberg Pass: Built in 1928, the 14-kilometre Rooiberg Pass connects the little village of Van Wyksdorp with Calitzdorp. You don’t need a 4×4 to drive this pass. A high clearance vehicle will do, but don’t take the challenge too lightly. There are some tight curves, sharp bends and a few pretty rough parts. This one is meant for a leisurely drive. So take your time and soak up the gorgeous views along the way.
